We’re always looking for a way to improve our lives…a way to get out of debt, improve our relationships, be happier, and make a difference in this world. When it comes to how to get this done, my mentor, Jim Rohn, identified how to do this in just three steps. So if you’re interested in improving your life, or thinking you want a brand new life, just follow these three steps…
1. Find Out How Things Work
I’ve said it for years, “I can build or do anything…I just need an idea.” Low and behold, that is Mr. Rohn’s first piece of advice. You need to understand how things work and come up with ideas. Ideas have the power to change your life. People tend to think not having money is the problem. The problem isn’t that you don’t have money. The problem is the lack of an idea to make more money.
The best way to find an idea is to create a constant study of finding out. Figure out how things work and write them down in your journal. Mr. Rohn then says to read over your journal and what you’ve learned. Repetition, repetition, repetition. This repetition will eventually bring ideas to surface. Then once you have some ideas, find out everything you can do. He says that you may not be able to do everything you find out, but you need to find out everything you can do. And then do those things.
Lastly, Mr. Rohn suggests you try to figure out how things work, like a child. He says to be curious, be excited, have faith, and have trust. This childlike innocence can open your eyes. It can help you ask the questions that help you figure out how things work. And before you know it, the ideas will be popping up all over the place.
2. Go To Work
Once you have the ideas, you have to go to work and take action on what you find out. Put together a game plan on how to improve. You can have a game plan for everything: wealth, happiness, health, and relationships. Write your game plan on paper. One of the best ways to think is on paper. I like to take ThinkTime. This is an hour I set aside to put down one problem I want to solve and write all the possible solutions out on paper. It seems easier to think that way to me.
Write down all the actions you take. And when you take those actions, Mr. Rohn says to take “massive action.” Don’t just make ten phone calls, make a thousand. Don’t knock on ten doors, knock on two or three thousand doors. Make sure your game plan has massive action in it. If it doesn’t , you need a new game plan.
Once you know the things you need to do, don’t just sit there. Do it. Mr. Rohn said,
“Don’t let your learning lead to knowledge, you’ll become a fool. Let your learning lead to action, you can become wealthy.”
Don’t sit on what you’ve learned for too long. Don’t wait until you’ve learned a million things. Take heavy action on a good idea. That’s the formula for success.
3. Don’t Try To Beat The System
You know those people who want to beat the system don’t you? The ones who want the shortcuts to wealth and happiness. Let me be clear and direct…”there are NO shortcuts in life!!!” Sure there are some things that can get you moving faster, but there are no direct lines to success in your life. You have to find out how things work and work it. You need to understand how the system works best, and then work it that way.
It may take a little longer to figure this out, but it’s worth the wait to do it right. It’s better to do it right than to do it twice. And you need to be a quick learner who is willing to change. Don’t be stubborn and hold on to your old ways of doing things. Remember, your old ways of doing things have gotten you to where you are today. Are you where you want to be? If not, you have to be willing to change.
To improve your life or create a brand new life for yourself, it doesn’t take a lot of steps. But it does take a focused and disciplined effort. It only takes three simple steps to make major changes in your life. You may look at these steps and say, “I’ve heard them all before” and then not take any action, just like you’ve always done. But like Mr. Rohn use to say, “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.”
If you’re ready to make a big change in your life, get started on these three steps. Do the work, write down a plan, and take massive action. Only you can change your life. What are you waiting for???
