Do you often ask yourself, “Why do bad things always happen to me?”  Do you find yourself constantly throwing a pity party where you’re the guest of honor?  No, the 5and2Guy is NOT picking on you.  I just want you to know that you’re not alone.  Bad things will happen in your life.  I’m sorry to say it, but they will.  These can’t be avoided, but perhaps you can find happiness again if you find The Magical Mustard Seed

The Magical Mustard Seed

There is an old Chinese tale about a woman whose only son died. In her grief, she went to the holy man and asked, “What prayers, what magical incantations do you have to bring my son back to life?”

Instead of sending her away or reasoning with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard seed from a home that has never known sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in search of that magical mustard seed.

She came first to a splendid mansion, knocked at the door, and said, “I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow. Is this such a place? It is very important to me.”

They told her, “You’ve certainly come to the wrong place,” and began to describe all the tragic things that recently had befallen them.

The woman said to herself, “Who is better able to help these poor, unfortunate people than I, who have had misfortune of my own?”

She stayed to comfort them, then went on in search of a home that had never known sorrow. But wherever she turned, in hotels and in other places, she found one tale after another of sadness and misfortune.

The woman became so involved in helping others cope with their sorrows that she eventually let go of her own. She would later come to understand that it was the quest to find the magical mustard seed that drove away her suffering.

The Takeaway

Sorrow will fall on us all.  None of us are immune.  If you love someone other than yourself, you’re certain to have some sad times ahead.  That’s okay though.  That’s part of life.  We need to accept that life will give us great times and life will give us hard times.  That’s what living is all about.  If you want to find happiness, accept this as a fact.  We have to be realistic about what life provides and be there for one another.  We can lift each other up in the good times and the bad.  You won’t find a house where sorrow hasn’t taken up residence for a time.

I pray each day for a good day.  I know that prayer will be answered.  It just might not be answered in the way I want it answered.  All I can do is think positive, be there for my family and friends, and understand that life has its ups and downs.  No one is immune.  So, do your best to be positive.  Give of yourself in the good times, be strong in the bad.  Reach out to those who are down.  This is how you weather the storm and find happiness.
