This is one of my favorite quotes of all time. It is simple, concise, and speaks volumes in just 12 little words. Sure you can read it quickly and dismiss it, but that would be a huge mistake. It tells us lots of things, but here are the major takeaways from this quote:
Have To Work On Ourselves
This quote tells us that if we want things to work out in our lives, we have to work on ourselves. And I’m not just talking about physical fitness. I am talking about all aspects of our life including money, happiness, wisdom, and relationships too. When we work on ourselves, we will see improvements and these improvements add up to a better version of ourselves. A better version of ourselves is better prepared to to deal with what life has to throw at us.
The World Doesn’t Just Fall Into Place
We all know that the world is not just going to bend at our will. It will throw us curve balls and challenges that will leave us confused, hurt, and afraid. But, if we work on ourselves, we can hit that curve ball and manage that challenge with confidence and strength. No, that is not to say we won’t ever be sad again. Sadness is a part of life, but it doesn’t mean we will be confused, hurt, and afraid. We can fight these feelings by being as prepared as possible. We can move from sadness back to happiness much quicker when we work on ourselves and our own joy.
We Are In Control
We can’t control what happens in life, but we can control how we think about it, and how we respond to it. We can be as happy as we want to be or as sad as we want to be. No, we can’t control everything, but we can control ourselves. The loss of a loved one will hurt, the loss of a job may sting, but understanding that our happiness can’t be dependent on these things is key. We need to be in control of our feelings and what we tell ourselves. If you are not in control, then you haven’t finished putting “the man together” yet. That is okay. You will find that your are a work in progress, but you have to keep at it.
Final Thoughts:
This is a very powerful little quote that can change your life if you understand and remember it. You can’t rely on others to make your world fall into place. You have to rely on you, how you see things, and how you react. You need to work on yourself, everyday, improving in all aspects of your life if you want to be happy. It doesn’t have to be mounds of work every day, but a little bit of work each day compounds into big changes and a stronger, healthier, happier you.
And once you “put the man together”, you have to keep him or her together. You have to stick to the things that got you to where you are, otherwise, you will revert back to an old version of you that feels like the world is against you and you can’t win. The world can fall into place for you, as soon as you put together the person who can handle anything the world throws at you.
