That’s a strange question to ask about on a Money Monday but it is oh so important. Author of the book Start With Why, Simon Sinek, said,
“People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.”
In other words, if you want to reach people and have them really love your product, and stick with you, then they have to buy why you do what you do. You may be asking, what is so special about a “Why?”
Walk The Plank “Why”
If I took an 8ft, 2’4 piece of wood and placed it on the ground, offering you $100 if you would walk across…would you? I bet you would. Now, what if I take the same 2’4 and placed it 10 stories in the air across two buildings? Would you cross it for $100 then? Maybe some of you daring guys and gals would, but most would not. It’s not worth risking your life over $100. Now what if the person you love the most was on the opposite building, which is now on fire and they need your help. Would you go across then? I am willing to bet you would, but what is different? You are still 10 stories in the air and the dimensions of the 2’4 haven’t changed. You know what’s different, your “why!!!” Your reason to go across has changed and that is all the motivation you need in the world. You probably forgot all about the $100.
Apple: Starts With Why
Tech giant Apple starts with “why” in everything they do. Imagine if Apple started all their marketing with “what” they do rather than “why” they do it. They would say that they make awesome computers and that they are beautiful, easy to use, and simple. That’s a nice pitch, but it doesn’t make me want to go out and buy one. Now imagine if Apple said, “We think differently. We challenge the status quo. We do all this by making awesome computers which are easy to use and beautiful.” Now they have my attention!!!
What This Means For You
Always start with “why” in anything you do. If you want money to flow your way, you have to have a strong “why.” With a strong “why” you will add value to people. They will believe in you and what you are doing. They will back you and you will have the strength to keep going when the going gets tough. Starting with “why” will make you better at what you do, help you work longer hours to do it, and give you a fire that makes you want to do your best.
All of these things, in one way, shape, or form will eventually lead to more money flowing your way. If you can touch many lives, you can have a huge impact and add huge value. And huge value equals money.
Final Thoughts
Whether you have your own business or work for a company, have a strong “why” for what you are doing. Believe in what you are doing and it will propel you to to the top. If you own a company with a strong “why,” you will offer great services or great products because you are trying to impact change, not just make money. If you work for a company and have a strong “why,” you will stand out as one of the best in the company and people will notice. You will add more value and money will come your way. A strong “why” makes all the difference in the world. I believe Steve Jobs was talking about a “why” when he said this,
“You gotta have a problem you want to solve…a wrong that you want to right. And it’s got to be something you are passionate about, cuz otherwise, you won’t have the perseverance to see it through.”
If you want to be successful and provide lots of value to people, then start with WHY!!! If you are not sure how to find your “why” whether in life or in business, get Simon Sinek’s book via my affiliate link here:
