The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

0

I do believe that getting rich is a science.   It takes learning, patience, and persistence to get to where you want to be in life financially.  But before we go any further, perhaps I should define what I mean by “rich.”  In this post we are talking about having a lot of money….more than you will ever need.  I know you can be rich in happiness, love, etc…, but here we are talking about money.

I read this neat little book by Wallace D. Wattles titled The Science of Getting Rich.  I am trying to get rich so I figured I would give it a read.  It was an interesting book.  The book I read was published in 2010, but it was originally written in 1910.  Needless to say, it had an older feel to it but it was only 150 pages long, so I figured it was worth a shot.

I enjoyed the book.  The discussion around the science of getting rich was more along the lines of how you must think and do versus exactly what to do.  I would recommend giving it a read if you have a few hours.  My goal for this post is to share with you a few of the key takeaways that I think anyone who wants to be rich must know.

Create Don’t Compete

Mr. Wattles suggested getting rid of all sense of competition.  You should focus on creating a new business and not be into any business where you are trying to beat someone else.  If you can get rid of the competitive mindset, you will never need to act hastily.  Forge your own path and let others follow in your footsteps!!!

Have Riches Come To You

You should always give more in value than you are paid in cash.  Go above and beyond providing a service or product.  The thought behind this is that you want to provide a product or service for which a customer is willing to trade for his cash.  The service has to be more valuable to him than the cash he has in his hand.  If you can become more valuable, the money will come to you.

This reminds me of a quote from Jim Rohn, “All you have to do to earn more money in the same amount of time is simply become more valuable.”  If you can become more valuable, you can provide more value.  When you do this, you will attract riches.

Gratitude

A grateful mental attitude will put you closer to the source from which all blessings come.  Mr. Wattles is saying that if you have a soul that is grateful, it will draw you closer to God, from which all blessings come.  Since wealth is a blessing, you must be grateful in order to receive.  You should focus your attention on the best you can be and surrounding yourself with the best.  Avoid inferiority and inferior things.

Think In The Certain Way

You must have a clear mental picture of what you want.  A vision that is backed by purpose.  Your purpose must be backed by an “invisible and unwavering faith” that what you want is already yours.  You have to be able to envision yourself already having what you want.  See the things you want in your hands.  Using them to better your life and the lives of others.  Always think positive things and don’t worry if yesterday’s work was done well.  Just do today’s work well!!!

Efficient Action

Do everything you can do each day but don’t try to do tomorrow’s work today.  Mr. Wattles is suggesting that you need to focus on the few things today that will move you closer to what you want today.  Don’t try to do too many things today as failure is trying to do too many things in an inefficient manner.  The few things you do focus on today must be done as efficiently as possible.  Make sure you have your vision in mind for everything you do.  If you find yourself having some spare time, use it to think about the small details of your vision.

The Impression of Increase

Always give the impression that you are progressing every day.  Give the impression that you are an advancing kind of guy or gal and that you can advance anyone who wants to do business with you.  Give this impression in all the social settings possible but do not boast or brag of your success.  Boasting and bragging is a sure way to lose an audience.

Some Cautions To Keep In Mind

Focus on completing today’s work in a successful manner.  Don’t think about the possible emergencies that could occur tomorrow.  Never admit to failure or speak in any kind of way that conveys any failure.  Never speak of how hard things are or the struggles you are having.  Never give the impression that your business success is being doubted.   Always speak about how things are going well and how your business is growing and you are advancing.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed this short book about getting rich.  Mr. Wattles spoke in high level ways of how you should carry yourself and the ways you should act to achieve the riches you want.  No, there wasn’t a step by step guide to getting rich.  But there was a clear display of the mindset you need to have in order to be successful.  I think we all can agree that the mindset is the most important piece of the puzzle.  If you have the right mindset, the rest will work itself out.  I leave you with an inspiring quote from Mr. Wattles,

“…for you can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.”
